Even after reviewing a number of the current textbooks in substance abuse, I found that few seem to address the issue of culture and diversity as an imperative in counseling the substance abuser or addicted client. In my own experience I have found this to be not only crucial for the client–counselor relationship but also a very important aspect of relapse prevention and an ethical imperative (American Counseling Association, 2014).
