CHAPTER 3 Children’s Librarian JENNA INNES Welcome to my “wubbulous” world as a children’s librarian at a public library. A formal description of my job would state that I coordinate collections and services for patrons under age eighteen and their caregivers. This includes providing reference services, craft and story programs, dedicated library spaces, outreach programs, and a variety of services.

I love when high school orchestra members ask for recordings of the music they’re performing, because I was never that motivated as a band member. I’ve seen patrons both young and old take pride in mastering how to search for materials in our online catalog, a system better designed for finding books than music or movies. They are awed when I zip to the shelf and spot something immediately. Unfortunately, not all people are so pleasant or appreciative. Some are inherently demanding, cranky, or unreasonable, and others may just be having a bad day.

Especially as radio becomes more tightly formatted, I’m thrilled that our patrons can explore our entire musical heritage, from Rachmaninoff to the Ramones, for free. My interest in librarianship grew from admiration for librarians. I had several wonderful encounters at the Free Library of Philadelphia, where I asked different librarians obscure questions. If they did not know the precise answers already, they knew exactly where to look and had immediate answers for me. I entered the field aspiring to do the same—to have magical librarian moments.
