High school library media specialists must relearn areas of service that affect early childhood. Elementary school library media specialists will have to look again at the range of literature, skills, and interests of high schoolers. Teaching as a School Library Media Profession Attention must also be drawn to the obvious. The NBPTS standards are prepared under the auspices of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The importance of teaching in these standards cannot be overstated.

The management and organization of libraries is computer-based. Resource provision relies on computer technology, and information skills encompass a range of computer and other technology skills as well. Although books are still prevalent and encouraging children to read remains one of the most powerful reasons why school library media specialists enter the field, there is no doubt that innovative uses of technology also prove to be a career draw. Technology must be defined as more than just computer hardware and software.

For the most part, it matches school library media licensure requirements, which in most states is K–12.
